When someone is in urgent need of money, it can feel like there are very few options available. Unfortunately, illegal lenders, commonly known as loan sharks, often take advantage of this vulnerability. While they may appear helpful at first, the reality is far more damaging, with many people trapped in cycles of fear, intimidation, and unmanageable debt.
At Derbyshire Community Bank, we’re committed to supporting our members and the wider community with safe, ethical financial options. That’s why we’re proud to work closely with Illegal Money Lending Team, also known as Stop Loan Sharks, and to promote their vital work across the UK.
The Illegal Money Lending Team is a national organisation dedicated to investigating and prosecuting illegal money lenders. But their work doesn’t stop there. They also provide specialist, compassionate support to people affected by loan sharks, helping them regain control of their finances and their lives.
Through education, enforcement, and support, Stop Loan Sharks has helped thousands of people across the UK escape the grip of illegal lending.
These free online training sessions are designed for anyone who may come into contact with individuals at risk, whether through community work, volunteering, or simply supporting friends and family.
By attending, you’ll learn
• How to identify the warning signs of illegal money lending
• The tactics loan sharks use to manipulate and control victims
• How to confidently support someone who may be affected
• Where to signpost for trusted, specialist help
Even if you’re not in a professional role, this knowledge can make a real difference. Many victims don’t realise they’re being exploited or don’t know where to turn.
The following sessions are available to book
All sessions are delivered online and completely free of charge.
We encourage all Derbyshire Community Bank members to consider attending one of these sessions. Just as importantly, if you know someone, a friend, family member, or colleague, who could benefit from this knowledge, please share this opportunity with them.
Loan sharks thrive in silence and isolation. By raising awareness and understanding, we can help protect our communities and ensure people get the support they deserve.
