At the recent FTT Fintech conference in London on 11-12th November, mutuals and building societies came together to explore how innovation and community focus are redefining what it means to be a mutual in today’s financial world. While Derbyshire Community Bank may be smaller than some of the building societies on stage, our impact in the communities we serve is substantial.

As a purpose-driven credit union, our focus is on understanding the needs of our members and developing services that truly make a difference. One example is our save as you borrow scheme, every borrower automatically saves as they repay their loans. For some members, this is their only opportunity to build savings. By encouraging saving alongside borrowing, we help members develop financial resilience, capability, and confidence—unlocking opportunities for a more secure future.
We were proud to share our insights on a panel chaired by Nicola Webber, alongside Richard Patterson and Colin Field. Their perspectives, alongside ours, highlighted the shared commitment of mutuals to serve members and communities with integrity, creativity, and purpose.
A big thank you to FTT Fintech for hosting the conference and providing a platform for mutuals like us to learn, grow, and share ideas. Derbyshire Community Bank may be small in comparison to larger organisations, but our mission ensures we make a real difference where it matters most—right here in our community.
