At Derbyshire Community Bank, we’re always looking for meaningful ways to support our members beyond financial services and our recent visit to Reach Community Grocery was a fantastic step in that direction.
Reach Community Grocery is doing vital work supporting individuals and families facing the challenges of today’s cost-of-living crisis. By providing affordable food and a welcoming community hub, they are helping ensure that no one has to struggle alone.
We were kindly invited along to learn more about the incredible work Reach does and to share how credit unions can support financial wellbeing. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that their team is deeply committed to making a real difference.
Our CEO, Phil Cole, spent time engaging with both staff and members, gaining valuable insight into how Reach supports the local community. We also had the opportunity to collaborate with Gillian Davel, whose passion and leadership are at the heart of the organisation.
We brought along our leaflets to raise awareness of the benefits of joining a credit union, and we were thrilled by the level of interest from attendees.
During our visit, we were also pleased to take part in a Money Matters session, spending time with members, having open conversations around managing money, and supporting people to feel more confident with their finances.
One of the highlights of the day was the interactive “Mind Your Money” game, brought along by our Board Member Tanya Moon. The game was a huge success and a great way to spark conversations around budgeting and financial confidence. It encouraged discussion, shared learning, and made talking about money more approachable for everyone involved.
Fellow Board Member Phil Fee also played a key role on the day, connecting with members and creating a friendly, approachable environment for discussion.
What stood out most was how aligned our missions are. While we focus on ethical savings and affordable loans, Reach Community Grocery provides essential day-to-day support for those who need it most.
Their services go far beyond food provision. Members can also access a range of free courses throughout the year, including:
This holistic approach helps individuals build confidence, skills, and resilience.
We believe there is a real opportunity to work together more closely.
By promoting Reach Community Grocery to our members and being a trusted referral point—we can help ensure people access the right support at the right time.
