With temperatures expected to exceed 30°C across parts of the UK this week, many of us will be looking for ways to stay cool and comfortable.

If you’ve completed our Heatwave Quiz, you’ll know that some popular cooling tips really do work. Here are some simple ways to stay safe during the hot weather.

If you haven’t completed our Heatwave Quiz…

Start Here

Keep Your Home Cool

  • Keep curtains and blinds closed during the hottest part of the day.
  • Open windows in the evening and overnight when temperatures are cooler.
  • Use fans to improve airflow and keep rooms feeling more comfortable.
  • Good insulation can help keep homes cooler in summer as well as warmer in winter.

Stay Hydrated

Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Foods with a high water content, such as melon, cucumber and berries, can also help you stay hydrated.

Sleep More Comfortably

Hot nights can make it difficult to sleep. You may find it helps to:

  • Take a cool shower before bed
  • Use lightweight bedding
  • Sleep downstairs if it is cooler than upstairs
  • Open windows once temperatures begin to fall in the evening

Looking After Children

Children can overheat more quickly than adults, so remember to:

  • Encourage regular drinks and water breaks
  • Dress them in lightweight clothing
  • Use hats, sunscreen and shade when outdoors
  • Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day

Looking After Pets

Hot weather can be uncomfortable for pets too.

  • Ensure they always have access to fresh water
  • Provide shade and cool places to rest
  • Avoid exercise during the hottest part of the day
  • Never leave pets in a parked vehicle

Remember that pavements and artificial grass can become much hotter than the air temperature.

Keep Energy Costs Down

Staying cool doesn’t have to mean higher bills.

  • Close curtains and blinds during sunny periods
  • Switch off unused electrical devices
  • Dry clothes outdoors where possible
  • Make the most of cooler evening air

Look Out for Others

Older neighbours, relatives and friends may be more vulnerable during hot weather.

A quick call, message or visit can make a real difference.

Enjoy the Sunshine Safely

A few simple steps can help you stay cool, comfortable and well throughout the heatwave.

Stay hydrated, keep your home as cool as possible and remember to check in on family, friends and neighbours who may need extra support.
