How Regular Salary Saving Can Make a Difference

Vicky joined Derbyshire Community Bank in 2010, when it was known as Erewash Credit Union. At the time, she was looking for a better way to manage her money and build savings separately from her bank account.

Since then, her financial situation has changed significantly. Vicky has got out of debt and developed a regular savings habit, including saving directly from her wages through Salary Saver. Having money set aside has helped her plan ahead for holidays, Christmas and the future, giving her greater peace of mind.

Why did Vicky join?

Vicky initially joined because she wanted somewhere separate to build up her savings without the money being absorbed by her bank overdraft.

As she explains:

“I joined DCB back when it was Erewash Credit Union in around 2010. I had debt with my bank and wanted to start a small savings account that wouldn’t get swallowed up in my overdraft.”

How has Salary Saver worked for Vicky?

Vicky later started using Derbyshire Community Bank’s Salary Saver, which allows employees of Salary Saver partner organisations to save directly from their pay.

For around four years, Vicky has been saving £25 each month through Salary Saver. Because the money is put aside directly from her salary, saving has become a regular part of her routine.

“I was late to salary saving and would have started it earlier had I known about it. I have saved £25 per month through salary saving for about four years now.”

Her savings are then there when she needs them, particularly for larger expenses throughout the year.

“I love the Salary Saver as I don’t notice it going out of my wages and let it build up so I can raid it when I go on holiday or for Christmas.”

What has being a member meant?

Since becoming a member, Vicky has seen a significant change in her financial situation. She has moved out of debt and now uses her savings to plan ahead and prepare for future expenses.

Being part of a local, member-owned organisation is also important to her, knowing that her money remains within an organisation supporting the local community.

“My financial situation has changed a lot since I joined DCB. I got out of debt and use the savings pots to plan ahead and save for the future.”

“It’s important to me that the money stays local and helps people in the local community.”

Vicky’s experience shows how putting aside a manageable amount regularly can build into something useful over time.

“I love the Salary Saver as I don’t notice it going out of my wages and let it build up so I can raid it when I go on holiday or for Christmas.”
