Every year, International Credit Union Day celebrates the difference credit unions make to people and communities around the world.

At Derbyshire Community Bank, we’re proud to be part of a movement that puts people before profit, helping members build financial resilience through savings, affordable lending and support with their financial wellbeing.

What do credit unions do?

Credit unions are member-owned, not-for-profit financial organisations. Unlike traditional banks, they exist to benefit their members rather than external shareholders.

Every day, credit unions help people develop positive savings habits, access responsible borrowing and work towards their financial goals.

For some, that might mean putting a little money aside each week to build an emergency fund. For others, it could mean accessing an affordable loan to cover an unexpected expense or a major purchase.

Credit unions also work with employers, councils, charities and other community organisations to help more people access financial services and find support when they need it.

Supporting our local community

At Derbyshire Community Bank, we work to improve the financial wellbeing of people and communities across Derbyshire.

With more than 7,000 members, we provide accessible savings accounts and responsible lending, while encouraging people to build savings habits that can help them become more financially resilient.

We also work in partnership with local organisations to help people access opportunities and support that may otherwise be out of reach.

Our work is about more than savings and loans. It’s about helping members feel more confident managing their money and giving them the tools to work towards a more secure financial future.

Why credit unions matter

Unexpected bills, rising living costs and difficulties accessing affordable credit can put pressure on households. Credit unions can play an important role by providing an alternative that focuses on people, fairness and financial wellbeing.

Across the UK, credit unions support their communities in different ways, from workplace savings schemes to affordable lending and financial education.

International Credit Union Day is an opportunity to recognise the staff, volunteers, members and community partners who make this work possible.
