In early September, Derby played host to an event that perfectly captured the power of sport to unite people, the Community Football Tournament. What unfolded on the pitch was far more than just football but it was a celebration of culture, unity, and community spirit.
From the energy of the matches to the warmth of the spectators, the day was a living example of how sport can break down barriers, build relationships, and create a sense of belonging.
We’re especially grateful to the Derby African Union for leading such an inspiring initiative. Their vision and commitment brought together communities from across Derby, highlighting the city’s vibrant diversity.
It was also wonderful to see partners like Community Action Derby — and so many other local organisations — working side by side to make the day such a success.
A special thank you goes to Councillor Carmel Swan and Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha for the invitation and for their dedication to making this tournament possible. Your hard work truly paid off, and the impact of your efforts was clear to everyone who attended.
We’re proud to be part of initiatives that strengthen connections, celebrate diversity, and create lasting engagement. September’s tournament demonstrated what’s possible when communities come together, and we’re excited to see this momentum continue well beyond the final whistle.
We’re proud to see our team shaping real change. Right now, our Financial Needs Assessment — led by Ola Timeyin — is gathering insights on saving, borrowing, managing unexpected costs, and navigating the UK financial system.
